Luxury vinyl plank installation has become one of the most popular flooring choices for homeowners right now, and it’s easy to see why. It’s durable, water-resistant, and comes in styles that genuinely look like hardwood. But with so many options on the market, picking the right LVP for each room in your home takes a little thought. Here’s how we guide our customers through the process every day.
Start With the Room’s Function
Not all rooms put the same demands on a floor. A busy kitchen in a household with kids and pets needs something with a thick wear layer and strong water resistance. A bedroom, on the other hand, gets far less foot traffic, so you have more flexibility to focus on warmth and texture. We always ask homeowners to think about how a room actually gets used before falling in love with a particular color or style. It keeps surprises from showing up six months after installation.
High-moisture areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms deserve extra attention. Look for LVP rated as fully waterproof, not just water-resistant. There’s a real difference, and in a bathroom where water can pool around a vanity or tub, it matters.
Thickness and Wear Layer: What the Numbers Actually Mean
You’ll see two numbers come up again and again when you’re shopping for luxury vinyl plank: overall thickness and wear layer thickness. The overall thickness affects how the floor feels underfoot and how well it handles subfloor imperfections. A thicker plank tends to feel more substantial and can hide minor dips or bumps in older subfloors, which is common in a lot of the homes we see throughout Girard, Cortland, and the surrounding areas.
The wear layer is the clear protective coating on top, measured in mils. A 6-mil wear layer works fine for a low-traffic bedroom. For a kitchen, hallway, or main living area, we typically recommend 12 mils or higher. If you have dogs or a house full of people coming and going, push toward 20 mils. It’s the part of the plank that takes all the abuse, so it’s worth spending a few extra dollars there.
Don’t Overlook Underlayment
Some LVP comes with underlayment already attached. Some doesn’t. This matters more than most people realize. Attached underlayment adds a layer of cushion, reduces sound transmission between floors, and can help with thermal insulation. In a two-story home in Canfield or Howland Center, that acoustic benefit alone can make a noticeable difference in how quiet the upper level feels.
If the LVP you love doesn’t include attached underlayment, that’s not a dealbreaker. A separate underlayment can be installed first. We can walk you through what makes sense for your specific subfloor and the room you’re working with.
Color, Width, and Style: Getting the Look Right
This is where the fun part comes in. LVP is available in a wide range of wood-look finishes, from light Scandinavian-style oaks to deep, rich walnut tones. Wider planks tend to make a room feel more open and modern. Narrower planks lean traditional. The finish texture matters too. A hand-scraped or embossed texture can hide minor scratches and scuffs far better than a high-gloss surface, which shows everything.
Lighting plays a bigger role than people expect. A color that looks perfect in the store can read completely differently in a north-facing living room with limited natural light. We always encourage customers in Poland, Canfield, and surrounding areas to bring home samples and live with them for a day or two before committing.
